Metro Detroit Faces Mild Weather Ahead of Active Thanksgiving Week

UPDATE: Metro Detroit is experiencing a mild and stable weather pattern as we head into the weekend, with temperatures reaching near 50°F today, November 17, 2023. Residents should prepare for patchy morning fog and drizzle that will dissipate as the day warms up.

Today’s weather remains significant as it marks the beginning of a comfortable stretch for late November. Afternoon highs are expected to hover around 50°F, ideal for outdoor activities. A shift to cooler temperatures is anticipated tonight, dipping to the low 30s°F as skies partially clear and winds remain light.

As the weekend unfolds, Saturday will start chilly but will improve with a mix of clouds and sun. Afternoon highs will reach around 46°F, making it a brighter day than Friday. Sunday promises to be the highlight of the weekend with the warmest temperatures, as highs return to the low 50s°F. This is an excellent opportunity for residents to hang holiday lights or run errands before the Thanksgiving rush.

The current mild weather is driven by a calmer pattern with zonal flow, keeping significant storm systems at bay for now. However, this tranquility is set to change next week as the weather becomes more active. Early in the week leading up to Thanksgiving, temperatures are expected to climb into the low to mid-50s°F, accompanied by generally cloudy skies.

By Tuesday afternoon, a weather system is forecasted to move through the area, increasing the likelihood of much-needed rain and cooler temperatures, which could lead to slower travel conditions on Wednesday night. Thanksgiving Day itself is projected to be cooler, with highs in the upper 30s°F and the possibility of snow showers.

For today: Expect mostly cloudy skies with highs in the low 50s°F and winds from the west at 5-10 mph. Tonight will see temperatures drop to the low 30s°F with light winds as skies begin to clear.

Saturday brings brighter conditions with highs near the average of 46°F and light winds. Sunday features a chilly tailgate for the Lions game, with clouds and sun mixed, and highs reaching the low 50s°F and winds at 10-15 mph.
