Maurepas Lady Wolves Roar Into State Semifinals with 10-2 Blowout Over Hackberry
Maurepas secured a decisive victory on the road, defeating third-seeded Hackberry 10-2 in the Class C quarterfinals on April 24, punching their ticket to the Louisiana state semifinals in Sulphur. The sixth-seeded Lady Wolves came out swinging and never looked back, delivering a dominant performance that has their coach and fans electrified heading into next week’s semifinals.
“I’m super proud of our girls!” exclaimed Maurepas coach Gabrielle Varnado. “Having experienced the Louisiana state tournament as an athlete myself, I’m ready to see them as a coach experience this for their first time. They’ve worked hard all season and they deserve to be there!”
Early Lead Sets Tone as Maurepas Rolls
The Lady Wolves exploded early, scoring five runs in the first two innings to take control. They extended that lead to 6-1 in the third before Hackberry narrowed it to 6-2. However, Maurepas continued to pile on the pressure with a run in the fourth inning and an impressive three-run surge during the seventh inning to seal the game 10-2.
Offensively, Layla Robinson led the charge, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Saydie Sterling added two hits including a double, driving in one run and scoring another. Power hitter Khloe Luquette blasted a home run, driving in two runs and scoring once in her two-hit performance. The team’s consistent offense also featured Gabby Bell with two hits and a run scored, alongside multiple runs scored and RBIs shared among Heydi Quamme, Kayden Delatte, and Sidney Lauzervich.
Dominant Pitching Leads Maurepas to Victory
The game’s decisive factor was the pitching prowess of Sidney Lauzervich, who threw a complete game. Lauzervich allowed just two runs on four hits, striking out 13 batters while walking five, maintaining control throughout to keep the Lady Wolves ahead.
