Massachusetts Tax Rebates Begin Today for 3 Million Residents

Massachusetts Tax Rebates Just Announced: Payments Start Today

UPDATE: Starting today, approximately 3 million taxpayers in Massachusetts will begin receiving tax rebates as part of a state law triggered by excess revenue collected this year. Governor Charlie Baker‘s administration is rolling out these automatic payments, with amounts varying based on income.

Payments will be distributed between now and December 15, 2023, and taxpayers can expect to see a payment labeled “MASTTAXRFD” if they opted for direct deposit. Those receiving checks will have them mailed directly to their homes.

IMPORTANT: Around 500,000 payments are set to go out this week alone, with an anticipated 1 million more to follow weekly. This means most eligible taxpayers should see their rebates arrive by the end of this month.

The law does not cap the size of the rebates, meaning that wealthier individuals could receive significant amounts. For instance, someone earning $35,000 could see a refund of around $200, while those making over $1 million could receive upwards of $7,000.

Additionally, taxpayers who have yet to file their 2021 tax returns still have until September 15, 2023, to do so and still receive a rebate. Officials state that refunds will be processed approximately one month after filing.

New Law Bans Mattress and Textile Disposal in Massachusetts

In other critical news, a statewide ban on the disposal of mattresses and textiles—including clothing and shoes—takes effect today. This new legislation aims to reduce landfill waste and promote recycling.

While officials indicate that fines for individual violations will generally not be imposed, they are enhancing public resources to help residents comply with the ban. Information about donation options is being made readily available.

In a significant development, authorities have confirmed the identity of the woman previously known as “Lady of the Dunes.” Ruth Marie Terry, a 37-year-old Tennessee native, was murdered nearly fifty years ago, with her remains discovered on a Provincetown beach. Although her killer remains unidentified, officials express hope that revealing her identity may lead to new investigative breakthroughs.
