BREAKING: Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell has just announced a significant $45 million settlement with Eversource Energy, aimed directly at providing immediate relief for electric and gas ratepayers across the state. This urgent resolution addresses longstanding issues and will directly impact bills for customers, creating substantial savings.
As part of the settlement, NSTAR Electric customers will receive a $20 million rate credit, while customers of Eversource Gas of Massachusetts will benefit from over $25 million in annual savings following the adjustment of rates due to Eversource’s recent acquisition of Columbia Gas of Massachusetts.
Attorney General Campbell emphasized her commitment to consumer protection, stating, “Affordability and consumer protection are at the forefront of our work.” This settlement marks a vital step in reducing financial burdens on Massachusetts residents, reflecting the AG’s proactive approach in tackling energy costs.
The settlement resolves 16 docket matters, some dating back more than a decade, including critical issues related to vegetation management and pension costs. Notably, the Resiliency Tree Work (RTW) program, which was intended to enhance grid reliability, faced invoice discrepancies that have now been addressed through this settlement. Customers will see $2.5 million in credits distributed over a span of 12 months starting January 1, 2026.
In addition to RTW credits, Eversource will provide $17.5 million in consumer credits related to Pension Adjustment Factor issues, also commencing on January 1, 2026. These measures are expected to bring significant financial relief to those impacted by rising energy costs.
Furthermore, the complexities stemming from the Columbia Gas transaction have been effectively managed, resulting in $25.7 million in annual benefits for ratepayers over the next 10 years. This outcome is attributed to operational synergies successfully negotiated by AG Campbell’s office, ensuring that consumers will not bear the burden of prior recovery costs tied to the acquisition.
In a related effort, Campbell’s office secured $32 million in savings for National Grid Electric ratepayers by contesting additional funding requests for an electric vehicle program, showcasing her dedication to safeguarding consumer interests.
This landmark settlement is expected to provide immediate and lasting relief for energy consumers in Massachusetts, reinforcing the importance of accountability in utility management. As these adjustments take effect, ratepayers can anticipate noticeable changes in their monthly bills, highlighting the AG’s commitment to making energy more affordable.
As the situation develops, Massachusetts residents are encouraged to stay informed about these changes and their implications for ongoing energy costs. This settlement is a significant victory for consumer advocacy and a clear message to utility providers about the need for transparency and fairness in billing practices.
