Marin County Faces Severe Storm: 2+ Inches of Rain, 80 MPH Winds

UPDATE: Marin County is currently experiencing a severe storm, with reports confirming over 2 inches of rain and wind gusts reaching up to 80 mph. The National Weather Service warns that the deluge will continue, impacting residents and travelers across the region.

Heavy rains began late Wednesday, November 12, and peaked early Thursday morning, November 13, flooding streets and causing disruptions. Rainfall totals by mid-afternoon included 2.74 inches on Mount Tamalpais, 2.26 inches in both Kentfield and San Rafael, and 1.82 inches in Novato. “There’s no dry day until Tuesday,” meteorologist Nicole Sarment emphasized, highlighting the ongoing threat of moisture through the weekend.

The storm’s intensity has led to widespread power outages, with 4,075 customers initially affected by outages across the Bay Area. By Thursday afternoon, 1,214 customers remained without power, including 662 in the North Bay. In a particularly hard-hit area, Horicon Elementary School in Annapolis was forced to close due to power issues, impacting local families and students.

Elsewhere in the Bay Area, rainfall has been equally significant. Just north of Guerneville, residents reported more than 4 inches of rain, while the Santa Cruz Mountains saw totals nearing 5 inches at Ben Lomond. San Francisco and Oakland airports recorded approximately 1.5 inches, causing flight delays and cancellations.

Residents are urged to exercise caution as the storm not only brings rain but also hazardous waves along North Bay beaches. The National Weather Service predicts breaking waves of between 13 and 18 feet through Friday evening, increasing the risk of riptides and sneaker waves that can quickly surge onto shore.

Authorities are actively monitoring conditions and providing updates. As the storm progresses, residents are advised to stay indoors whenever possible and to prepare for potential flooding and further power outages. Expect additional updates from the National Weather Service and local officials as this developing situation unfolds.
