Man Arrested for Death Threats Against Rep. Robert Garcia

URGENT UPDATE: A man has been arrested for making credible death threats against Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Long Beach, according to a statement from the congressmember’s office. The arrest was made by U.S. Capitol Police after the suspect attempted to enter a federal building on November 4, 2023, coinciding with Election Day in California.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect, identified as Richard Griffin, age 43, from Pennsylvania, had sent alarming messages to Garcia’s office, indicating he intended to travel to Washington, D.C., to kill the congressman. Thankfully, Garcia was safely in California during the incident.

The U.S. Capitol Police reported that Griffin was stopped before he could pass through security at the Russell Senate Office Building. This quick action prevented a potentially dangerous situation. “We will not tolerate any threats to the members of Congress, their families, or staff,” stated USCP Chief Michael Sullivan. He emphasized that the department maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards threats against elected officials.

Griffin’s arrest was part of a larger effort by USCP, which had issued a “be on the lookout” bulletin for him on October 28. The suspect has previously contacted congressional offices and various government officials via email, raising concerns about his intentions.

As the investigation continues, the Capitol Police urge the public to remain vigilant. The agency’s public information office is currently closed due to the federal government shutdown but remains operational for security functions.

This concerning incident highlights the ongoing risks that lawmakers face, particularly in an increasingly polarized political climate. The safety of public officials is paramount, and the swift response by law enforcement underscores the seriousness with which these threats are taken.
