Major $13 Million Drainage Project Kicks Off Near Scottsdale

UPDATE: A crucial $13 million drainage improvement project is set to begin on Monday, October 30, 2023, along the Scottsdale-Tempe border. This urgent initiative aims to tackle the persistent flooding issues that have endangered both residents and drivers in the area.

The project will specifically target the intersection of Miller Road and Roosevelt Street, an area notorious for severe flood damage during storms. The newly designed Roosevelt Street Storm Drain will extend an existing 78-inch drain, enhancing stormwater management by channeling excess water to the Indian Bend Wash. This wash recently became the site of a tragic incident where a man tragically lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters in his vehicle.

Construction will involve the installation of approximately 7,500 linear feet of new storm drain, along with 1,200 feet of lateral connection pipes and new curb inlet catch basins, manholes, and lateral drains along 74th, 70th, and 68th streets. The project is a collaborative effort between the cities of Tempe and Scottsdale, alongside the Maricopa County Flood Control District, which is contributing $8.45 million to the funding.

Construction is expected to last over a year, with an anticipated completion date of February 2027. Local officials emphasize the importance of this project in mitigating future flood risks, ensuring the safety of the community, and protecting property from storm damage.

Residents and commuters are advised to stay alert for construction updates and potential detours in the area as this significant project unfolds.
