UPDATE: A powerful ceremony honoring veterans unfolded today, November 7, 2023, at the Veterans Memorial in Lynnfield. Community members came together to recognize the sacrifices made by those who served in the defense of freedom, with moving speeches from both military and civilian leaders.
Veterans Agent Bruce Siegel emceed the event, while Select Board Chairman Phil Crawford delivered a poignant address. Retired Army Captain and Lynnfield native David Gallo, the guest of honor, shared gripping personal stories from his time in Desert Storm, highlighting the legacy of local veterans who inspired him.
“How we treat our veterans, how we honor them, determines whether future generations are willing to serve,” Gallo stated. “That has a direct impact on the security of our country and its people today and every day.”
Crawford quoted poet G.K. Chesterton, emphasizing the unique courage of veterans: “‘Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die.’” He reminded attendees that Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I, a war once dubbed “the war to end all wars.”
David Gallo enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1984 and was mobilized for Desert Storm in 1990. He rose through the ranks to become a captain before retiring in 2007. A former Lynnfield Boy Scout, Gallo recalled marching in the welcome home parade for Lauren Lengyel, a Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war, whose story profoundly impacted him.
Gallo shared how Lengyel’s courage helped him confront his own fears in battle. He reached out to Lengyel via email as he prepared for retirement, expressing gratitude for the inspiration he provided during tough times. Gallo considered this acknowledgment from a “hero” a significant honor.
In his emotional address, Gallo reminded the audience that the sacrifices of veterans extend beyond the battlefield, often deeply affecting their families. “I remember my own wife being much more nervous about me going off to war than I was,” he reflected. “Families aren’t always so lucky.”
The ceremony served as a reminder of the continuing legacy of service and sacrifice in Lynnfield. Gallo’s call to action resonated deeply, urging the community to ensure that veterans receive the recognition and respect they deserve.
As the event concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose, understanding that honoring veterans is vital for inspiring future generations to serve. The commitment to supporting veterans remains strong in Lynnfield, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
