Langdon Area/Munich Secures Region 2B Volleyball Title, Heads to State

UPDATE: Langdon Area/Munich has clinched the Region 2B volleyball title with a decisive victory over Park River/Fordville-Lankin, winning in straight sets: 25-9, 25-15, 25-13. This triumph secures their spot in the upcoming state tournament, continuing their quest for back-to-back championships.

The title match took place earlier today in Devils Lake, where Langdon Area/Munich dominated the first two sets. After a brief challenge in the third set, they quickly regained control, showcasing their relentless spirit and experience. “We were sparked by our defense tonight, there’s no question,” said Rich Olson, head coach of Langdon Area/Munich. “We had outstanding digs and won some of the longer rallies.”

After falling behind 7-5 in the third set, the Cardinals rallied to take a commanding 19-9 lead, driven by key plays from players like Kemi Morstad and Mya Swanson. Morstad’s final block sealed the match and the region title for her team. The victory adds to their impressive season record of 36-5.

Lexi Gendron played a pivotal role, contributing critical points during the match, while sophomore serve specialist Liv Prouty energized the team with her performance. The Cardinals now look forward to defending their state title in a new three-class format.

On the other side, Park River/Fordville-Lankin coach Nicole Wollangk, recently named the Region 2B Coach of the Year, acknowledged her team’s efforts despite the loss. “Our serve-receive was doing a lot better, which was why we were able to stay competitive,” she noted. “To Langdon Area/Munich’s credit, they were flying around on defense.”

Langdon Area/Munich’s victory not only signifies their strength but also highlights the potential for young talent within the team. Senior player Raeleigh Ratzlaff expressed her pride in her teammates, stating, “We have so much talent, and they’re all so confident. I love this group of girls.”

Meanwhile, Park River/Fordville-Lankin, now at 22-14, will have another shot at state as they prepare for the state qualifier tournament on Saturday in Jamestown. This marks their first opportunity to return to the state tournament since 2016.

In the third-place game, Benson County defeated New Rockford-Sheyenne 3-1, setting them up for a last-chance opportunity to qualify for the state tournament. Benson County will face the Region 1 runner-up at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the University of Jamestown.

The All-Region 2B team was also announced, honoring players from various schools for their outstanding performances throughout the season. Ava Peterson of New Rockford-Sheyenne was named Region 2 Senior of the Year.

As the excitement builds for the upcoming state tournament, Langdon Area/Munich aims to carry their momentum into the next round, while Park River/Fordville-Lankin seeks redemption and a chance to showcase their competitive edge.
