James Donald “Jim” Early Passes Away at 87, Leaving Lasting Legacy

UPDATE: James Donald “Jim” Early, a beloved figure in the Waterford community, has passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on December 18, 2025. This news comes as a profound loss to family and friends who cherished his legacy of service and kindness.

Born on July 3, Jim celebrated his birthdays with joy on the Fourth of July. He was born in Brady Hospital, Albany, New York, the third of five children to the late Joseph A. Early, Esq. and Loretto Powers Early. He was predeceased by siblings Joseph A. Early (late Patricia), C. Eileen Early, and Loretto Therese Early, but is survived by his loving sister Elizabeth M. Early and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim’s life was marked by dedication to family and community. He married Helen K. Clark in June 1967, raising five daughters together. Tragically, their daughter Mary Ellen Early passed away on June 26, 2025. Jim is remembered by his surviving daughters: Grace E. Boss (Mark), Jane F. Early, Margaret H. Warner, and Kathleen L. Early, alongside nine cherished grandchildren.

Educated at St. John the Evangelist Grammar School and St. Joseph’s High School, Jim initially pursued studies for the priesthood at Mater Christie Seminary and Saint Bernard’s Seminary. After four years, he shifted his focus to education, where he made a lasting impact as a Guidance Counselor at St. Mary’s Academy in Glens Falls and later as an English Composition teacher at Hudson Valley Community College until his retirement in December 1999.

Beyond education, Jim served the Town and Village of Waterford as Sole Assessor for a decade, showcasing his commitment to public service. He was also a Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with Realty USA and a proud member of the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department for over 57 years.

Jim’s passion extended to music; he was a talented pipe organist, most recently at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy. He actively participated in the Knights of Columbus and the Waterford Lions Club, demonstrating his dedication to community service.

In his later years, Jim faced health challenges and received loving care at the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home in Troy. His funeral is scheduled for Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, followed by a service at St. Mary of the Assumption Church at noon. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Waterford.

The Early family invites those wishing to honor Jim’s memory to contribute to the Hospice Community or the Waterford Fire Department. Jim’s legacy of kindness, friendship, and faith will undoubtedly be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
