UPDATE: The Detroit Lions are on a bye this week, providing a brief pause for defenses trying to contain the explosive Jahmyr Gibbs. Fresh off a record-breaking performance, Gibbs carved up the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for 218 yards and two touchdowns in a commanding 24-9 victory on Monday night.

Gibbs made history as he became the first player in franchise history—and only the 10th in NFL history—to accumulate at least 135 rushing yards, 80 receiving yards, and two rushing scores in a single game. “If you give him a crease, he’s going to make you pay — and he made us pay,” remarked Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles.

Currently, Gibbs ranks fifth in the NFL with 720 yards from scrimmage and second with 526 rushing yards, also standing third in the league with six rushing touchdowns. Lions head coach Dan Campbell confidently stated, “There will be no looking back. He’s going to just continue doing this.”

The Lions (5-2) will have a crucial break from competition until they face the Minnesota Vikings at home on November 2. This time off provides a strategic advantage for opponents, who will study film to devise plans to contain the dual-threat Gibbs.

Gibbs showcased his incredible speed with a career-best 78-yard touchdown run against the Bucs, clocking in at 22.23 mph, the second-fastest run of the year. “Those really long ones are fun to watch… I don’t know how many safeties in the league could catch him,” said Lions quarterback Jared Goff.

He further demonstrated his agility, leaving defenders grasping at air after a slick catch in the flat. “That’s just me watching YouTube,” Gibbs explained, highlighting his playful approach to honing his skills.

In their previous matchups, the only teams to limit Gibbs effectively were the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs, where he managed just 50 yards and 65 yards from scrimmage, respectively. However, with his latest performance, he’s proving to be a game-changer.

As the Lions aim for their first Super Bowl appearance, they’re gearing up for a challenging run. Following the bye, they will host divisional rivals including the Giants, Packers, Cowboys, and Steelers, while also facing road games against the Washington Commanders, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, Vikings, and Chicago Bears.

Coach Campbell expressed optimism, saying, “It feels good to get to 5-2. I’m pleased with the team.” He also commended his defense, which, despite missing several key players due to injuries and suspensions, held the Buccaneers to a season-low nine points, making four sacks and securing one interception.

“You are going to see players start to come back over the next month, so that is encouraging,” Campbell added, indicating that the team’s potential for improvement remains high as they look to solidify their place in the playoffs.

As the Lions prepare to resume their season, the excitement surrounding Gibbs and the team continues to build. Fans and analysts alike will be eager to see if they can maintain their momentum and overcome the challenges that lie ahead.
