Holiday Storm Slams Southern California with Up to 9 Inches by Friday

UPDATE: A powerful holiday storm is unleashing torrential rain across Southern California, with Santa Clarita bracing for an astounding 6 to 9 inches of precipitation by Friday evening. Residents are urged to prepare for hazardous conditions as meteorologists warn of severe weather impacts today.

The storm, fueled by an atmospheric river, is expected to bring heavy rains starting tonight, with the National Weather Service forecasting 1 to 3 inches of rain in just the next 24 hours. According to Joe Sirard, a meteorologist, the worst is not over yet. “We have a chance of showers and thunderstorms today through this evening, with a very small chance of a weak tornado,” he stated.

Heavy downpours are anticipated to peak after 10 p.m. today, continuing through Friday afternoon. Winds will also pose a risk, with gusts expected to reach between 20 to 50 MPH throughout Thursday. Sirard cautions, “With the already saturated ground, any additional rain can lead to flooding.”

Residents are currently under a flood watch, and emergency crews are on alert. “It’s going to be another hazardous to dangerous situation coming up,” Sirard added. There are already reports of flooding impacts, including a sinkhole at the Newhall Metrolink Station, which was reported around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but trains were rerouted to ensure safety.

Officials are actively addressing road safety concerns as well. The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station confirmed that deputies responded to a mudslide blocking lanes at Sand Canyon Road and Big Tujunga Canyon Road on Wednesday afternoon. Crews cleared approximately 200 feet of debris, but drivers should remain vigilant of potential delays due to ongoing road conditions.

In a social media update, the city reported that the westbound right lane of Soledad Canyon Drive is closed due to the washing out of sidewalks, advising residents to expect delays and use alternate routes.

Looking ahead, while the forecast predicts sunny weather following Friday, another storm could impact the region next week. As the situation develops, residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and heed all warnings regarding flooding and severe weather conditions.

With the community facing intense weather, the emotional impact is palpable as residents seek safety and keep each other informed. Share this urgent update to ensure everyone stays prepared and safe during this dangerous holiday storm.
