GCC Unveils Renovated $6.3M Student Success Center Today

UPDATE: Guam Community College (GCC) has officially unveiled its newly renovated Student Success Center during a grand opening ceremony held earlier today at the Mangilao campus. This $6.3 million capital improvement project, which began in July 2022, marks a significant enhancement to the college’s commitment to supporting students, staff, and the community.

The 6,000-square-foot facility, also known as Building B, is strategically located at the front of the campus. It will house essential services, including the Assessment and Counseling Department, GCC Identification Card Services, and the Faculty Senate office. Additionally, a brand-new computer lab on the second floor features an outdoor veranda for students to enjoy.

“Most importantly, this building serves as the heart of our campus—where student learning, creativity, and success begin,”

stated GCC President Mary A.Y. Okada during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. She emphasized that the vision for the new center was driven by student input, underscoring the importance of the student voice in shaping campus facilities.

Okada remarked, “Our students were the driving force behind this project, just like they have been for many other efforts on campus.” This sentiment was echoed in the college’s recent reaffirmation of its eight-year accreditation, where student feedback played a crucial role in the evaluation process.

The Student Success Center is not just a hub for academic resources; it also meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, making it the eighth environmentally sustainable building on the GCC campus. “I’d like to thank my team for staying focused on our mission—because everything they do supports our students,” Okada added.

Notably, the project was funded through the Governor’s Education Stabilization Fund and GCC’s Capital Projects Fund, ensuring that the renovation incurred no additional debt for the college. Okada highlighted the innovative funding strategies employed by the institution: “If you look around our campus, you’ll see that we’re constantly finding creative ways to fund our capital projects through multiple sources. That’s our strength—and our promise to the community.”

This grand opening signifies a pivotal moment for GCC as it continues to foster an environment where student success is prioritized. With the new Student Success Center now operational, students and faculty alike can look forward to enhanced academic resources and support.

As the college moves forward, all eyes will be on how this revitalized space will contribute to the academic and personal growth of its students. Stay tuned for further updates on the impact of this significant development at GCC.
