Franklin G. Schappell, 91, Passes Away; Services Set for December 16

URGENT UPDATE: Franklin G. Schappell, a beloved figure in Perry Township, has passed away at the age of 91 on December 19, 2025. The community mourns the loss of this veteran and devoted family man, who leaves behind a legacy of love and service.

The funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Zion’s Church, located at 770 Zion Church Road, Hamburg, PA. Family and friends can pay their respects during a viewing at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service. Following the ceremony, burial will take place at Zion’s Cemetery in Perry Township.

Franklin was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth G. (Reppert) Schappell, who passed on July 31, 2019. Together, they cultivated a loving family, which includes three sons: Rodney F. Schappell of Cumru Township, Dennis J. Schappell, married to Lisa (Simmons) of Centre Township, and Gregory C. Schappell, married to Tulsa (Hosmer) of Shoemakersville. He is also survived by three daughters: Denise E. Schappell of Perry Township, Brenda R. (Schappell) Zellers of Hamburg, and Patti E. (Schappell) Cahill, wife of Dale Cahill, from Geneva, OH, along with 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Franklin dedicated many years to his career at Berks Packing, where he operated a chopper and contributed to the famed Berks Hot Dogs until his retirement in 1996. Beyond his work, Franklin’s passion for hunting, farming, gardening, and sports enriched his life and the lives of those around him. He was also a faithful member of Zion’s Church, where he worked tirelessly on cemetery maintenance.

Franklin’s passing is felt deeply within the community, and many will gather to celebrate his life and contributions. The family invites all who knew him to join in honoring his memory.
