Fargo Officials Urge Residents: No Illegal Snow Dumping Now!

URGENT UPDATE: With heavy snow expected this week, Fargo and state officials are sounding the alarm on the dangers of illegal snow dumping. Homeowners are reminded that moving snow onto roadways is not only hazardous but also against the law in North Dakota, with fines reaching up to $500 for violations.

As the winter season kicks off, the North Dakota Department of Transportation is stressing the importance of keeping roads clear. Barry Kinnischtzke, operations section team leader, stated, “If it’s not clear, that’s going to lead to those issues.” He emphasized that illegal snow dumping can result in collisions and other serious accidents, especially as the winter progresses.

Officials warn that large snow piles obstruct sight lines and can hinder emergency responders. “Ditches are designed to store snow,” Kinnischtzke explained, “but larger piles lead to drifting on roadways.” This can create hazardous conditions for drivers and increase the risk of accidents.

In Walsh County, officials have alerted landowners that they could face financial liability if snow piles contribute to any incidents. The city of Fargo’s Public Works director, Ben Dow, echoed these concerns, urging residents to refrain from piling snow at the ends of driveways, which can obstruct traffic and lead to costly fines.

As temperatures drop and additional snowfall looms, authorities are asking the public to act responsibly. “We’re just trying to do what’s best for the traveling public and keep our roadways safe,” Kinnischtzke said.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepare for the incoming weather. The safety of all drivers depends on collective efforts to keep roadways clear and safe this winter.
