UPDATE: A tragic incident unfolded in San Mateo this morning when a driver struck and killed a pedestrian at approximately 10:30 a.m. The incident occurred at the intersection of South El Camino Real and 17th Avenue, according to the San Mateo Police Department.
Officers arrived at the scene to find the pedestrian, described only as a woman, suffering from critical injuries. She was rushed to a local hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries shortly after. Authorities have not yet released her identity, pending notification of her family.
The driver involved in the collision remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver turned north from Bovet Road onto South El Camino Real and struck the pedestrian while she was in the north crosswalk at 17th Avenue.
In response to the incident, lanes of South El Camino Real and the westbound Highway 92 off-ramp to South El Camino Real were closed for approximately three hours, causing significant disruptions.
