UPDATE: A Delaware woman is facing serious consequences after being sentenced to jail on drug trafficking charges following a traffic stop on Interstate 476 in Towamencin Township. Sherena Cooper, 41, from Wilmington, received a sentence of 7 to 23 months in the county jail after pleading guilty to possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance related to an incident that occurred on June 3, 2024.
The ruling was handed down by Judge Risa Vetri Ferman, who noted that Cooper would be eligible for the jail’s work release program. This means she could potentially serve her sentence under house arrest once her employment is verified by jail officials.
At approximately 8:30 PM on June 3, state police noticed a Mercedes Benz E350 driven by Cooper speeding at 85 mph in a 55 mph zone, prompting a traffic stop. According to the arrest affidavit, Trooper Andrew Korrubin observed marijuana buds in plain view and detected a strong smell of marijuana. Cooper reportedly consented to a search of her vehicle, leading to the seizure of significant quantities of illegal substances.
During the search, authorities claimed to have found a quarter pound of methamphetamine and two ounces of marijuana. Both substances tested positive in field tests conducted by the police.
Despite the gravity of the charges, friends of Cooper rallied in her support, submitting letters to the court that portrayed her as a devoted family member and a churchgoing individual striving to turn her life around. These personal testimonies were presented during her sentencing, highlighting the complexity of her situation.
Several additional charges, including possession of controlled substances and drug paraphernalia, were dismissed at the time of sentencing, simplifying the legal ramifications of Cooper’s case.
This case underscores the ongoing issues surrounding drug trafficking and public safety on Pennsylvania highways. As authorities continue to crack down on illegal substances, the implications of Cooper’s actions serve as a reminder of the potential consequences of such behavior.
As the story develops, it remains to be seen how Cooper will navigate her potential work release program and whether she can successfully rehabilitate her life in light of these serious charges. Stay tuned for further updates on this story as it unfolds.
