Delaware DA Charges Opioid Crisis Leader with Sexual Coercion

UPDATE: Lawrence Arata, the head of the Opioid Crisis Action Network, has been charged with serious offenses, including human trafficking and sexual coercion. Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer announced these shocking allegations today, confirming that Arata used opioid settlement funds to exploit vulnerable women battling addiction.

According to Stollsteimer, Arata, 65, “cynically and cruelly misused those funds as leverage to satisfy his sexual desires.” This urgent case raises alarm bells about the ethical management of funds meant to support individuals in recovery.

Arata turned himself in on Wednesday to the Delaware County District Attorney’s Criminal Investigation Division and was released on bail shortly afterward. No attorney has been listed for Arata in court records, and he has not commented on the charges. The Opioid Crisis Action Network, which Arata co-founded in 2018, has also not responded to requests for comment.

The allegations surfaced after a joint investigation between the Criminal Investigation Division and Upper Darby Police, prompted by multiple complaints. The affidavit states that Arata allegedly traded sexual favors for benefits such as meal credits, gift cards, and rental assistance from the program designed to help those struggling with substance use disorder.

Stollsteimer emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We also believe that there may be more victims of Mr. Arata’s predator behavior.” He urged any additional victims or witnesses to come forward and report their experiences.

This case not only highlights the vulnerability of individuals facing addiction but also raises questions about accountability in organizations handling critical funding. The preliminary hearing for Arata is scheduled for November 27, and the community is left to grapple with the implications of these allegations.

As the investigation continues, the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office is committed to uncovering the full extent of the misconduct. This urgent situation underscores the need for vigilance and transparency in the management of funds meant to aid recovery efforts.
