Delaware County Unveils Bell to Honor U.S. 250th Anniversary

UPDATE: Delaware County has officially unveiled a striking new bell sculpture, marking the countdown to America’s 250th birthday in 2026. The announcement came during a vibrant ceremony at the ShopRite of Drexeline on Monday, where local officials and community members gathered to witness the installation.

The bell, a part of the Bells Across PA initiative led by America250PA, symbolizes the proud legacy of Pennsylvania and the nation. Designed by local artist Joshua Ruggeri, the colorful fiberglass sculpture captures the spirit of independence and community pride. “To me, America250 celebrates legacy,” said Pat Burns, chair of America250PA and CEO of ShopRite, emphasizing the bell’s significance in telling the story of the state’s contributions to the American journey.

The unveiling, which attracted a diverse group of elected officials, is a precursor to a series of events leading up to the national celebration. The Delaware County Bell will be one of 108 bells across all 67 counties in Pennsylvania, each representing unique local stories. The initiative aims to foster community engagement and pride ahead of the milestone anniversary.

“It’s the ultimate canvas of freedom,” Ruggeri stated, highlighting the bell’s artistic elements, including a soaring eagle and the depiction of Independence Hall. “Liberty, like a Delco accent, is not going anywhere.”

The event also served as a reminder of the historical significance of the area. One bell, located in the historic 1724 courthouse in Chester, was rung on July 8, 1776, to announce the reading of the Declaration of Independence. It will ring again on July 8, 2026, commemorating two and a half centuries of freedom.

Attendees included Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton, and state Senator Tim Kearney, all of whom expressed their commitment to preserving democracy and celebrating the nation’s rich heritage. Scanlon stressed the importance of unity during challenging times, stating, “Our commitment to democracy and self-government is vital.” Kearney echoed this sentiment, noting the bells serve as a visual reminder of the connections among residents and their shared history.

However, the event also unfolded against the backdrop of pressing political issues, including an impending federal government shutdown and ongoing budget discussions in Harrisburg. Kearney remarked on the unusual situation of a budget impasse occurring while the state boasts a $3 billion surplus. Scanlon voiced concerns regarding the lack of bipartisan negotiations in Washington, calling attention to the vital funding that supports local services.
