David “Dave” Platt, Beloved Safety Advocate, Passes Away at 70

UPDATE: David “Dave” Platt, a cherished safety advocate and community figure, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, at the age of 70, following a brief illness. His death marks a significant loss for family, friends, and all who knew him, as he dedicated his life to ensuring workplace safety across California.

Born on June 14, 1955, in Whittier, CA, Dave was known for his vibrant spirit and commitment to helping others. He graduated from Calhi School in 1973 and later earned a degree in Anthropology from Sonoma State University in 1978. During his college years, he married Jan Vogee, marking the beginning of a life rich with experiences and relationships.

In his professional career, Dave earned the title of Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and became affectionately known as “The Safety Guy.” He played a crucial role in teaching employers how to protect their workforce from injuries and accidents. His passion for safety was matched only by his dedication to his family.

After moving to the Santa Cruz area, Dave married Ailene Platt and welcomed a daughter, Carolanne Baker. His later years were spent in Sequim, WA, where he continued to embrace life’s joys, including photography, cooking, and music. As a founding member of the Whittier Boys Club, he made lasting contributions to his community, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and mentorship.

Dave is survived by his wife, Merribeth Platt (married 2006), his daughter, Carolanne, and a large extended family, including his sister, brothers-in-law, and step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Marian Platt.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the American Cancer Society in Dave’s memory. His impact on those around him will be remembered fondly as a beacon of safety, encouragement, and community spirit.
