UPDATE: The Christopher Newport women’s basketball team achieved a stunning victory over the previously unbeaten Shenandoah, winning 64-49 on December 3, 2023, in Winchester. Coach Bill Broderick‘s Captains have now extended their winning streak to four games, showcasing their growth even in a rebuilding year.
The win is particularly significant as it pushes the Captains to a 6-2 record, defying early season expectations. Before the season began, Broderick expressed optimism if his team could manage a 3-3 start. They have surpassed that, recovering from losses against Bridgewater and No. 8 Johns Hopkins.
In the game, standout performances helped seal the deal. Sarah Pritz led with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Elizabeth Creed contributed a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Hailey Kellogg was also pivotal, hitting four 3-pointers for another 13 points.
The loss for Shenandoah, now 5-1, marks a setback as they sought to break into the top 25 rankings. Star player Addisyn Banks scored 18 points while Emily Williams added 14 points, but the team struggled to regain momentum after their early lead of 4-3.
CNU fans will be looking forward to the team’s first home game of the season, set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday against Marymount at the Freeman Center. This upcoming matchup will be crucial as the Captains aim to build on their current success.
In other notable games, the UVA Cavaliers cruised past Maryland Eastern Shore with a decisive 92-59 victory, while No. 1 Connecticut overwhelmed Xavier 104-39. Meanwhile, No. 3 UCLA defeated No. 14 Tennessee 99-77, thanks to a stellar performance by Gabriela Jaquez who scored 29 points.
Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses and watch for how these teams adjust for their future matchups. The momentum is building, and the competition is heating up!
