Central Knights Edge Fargo Davies 4-3 in Overtime Thriller

UPDATE: In a nail-biting finish, the Grand Forks Central Knights triumphed over Fargo Davies, winning 4-3 in overtime on October 26, 2023, at Purpur Arena. Rylan Wockenfuss delivered the decisive goal after the Knights relinquished a two-goal lead in the third period, showcasing their resilience against a tough East Region contender.

This game was crucial for the Knights, who are still working to solidify their special teams. Head coach Grant Paranica remarked, “Hopefully, it’s a character builder for us to be in a tight game like that.” Central’s performance in the third period raised concerns, as they allowed two quick goals to Davies, tying the game after leading 3-1.

With just 8:21 left in regulation, a five-minute major penalty for contact to the head was called on Trey Clauson. Shortly after, a slashing penalty assessed to Rylan Spicer put the Eagles on a 5-on-3 advantage. Despite killing off Spicer’s penalty, the fatigue set in, and moments later, Mason Pederson scored, followed by Dom Diebert’s goal that leveled the match.

“We let the game get out of control. We had it in control and by taking some penalties at inopportune times, we gave Davies life,” Paranica added, reflecting on the team’s struggles with special teams, which has seen them score just one goal on ten power play attempts through three games.

Despite the setbacks, Central rallied, with Wockenfuss, Spicer, and Nolan Marto stepping up under pressure. The overtime winner came when Spicer delivered a slick pass from behind the net to Wockenfuss, whose shot trickled past the goaltender after deflecting off Breckun Metcalf.

This victory is significant early in the season, placing Central second in the East Region standings with five points. They are closely trailing Sheyenne following their victory over Red River. Fargo Davies, now with just one point, faces challenges as they look to improve their 1-1-0-1-0 record.

The Knights’ next challenge is a rivalry match against Red River on Tuesday at Purpur Arena. As Central continues to build momentum, this overtime win could prove pivotal for their confidence and performance moving forward.
