Beloved James E. Smith, 26, Passes Away Unexpectedly in FL

URGENT UPDATE: The community is mourning the sudden loss of James Edward Smith, a vibrant 26-year-old from Lowell, MA, who tragically passed away on the morning of November 8, 2025, in Tampa, FL. This shocking news has left family, friends, and fellow servicemen heartbroken.

James, known for his infectious smile and larger-than-life personality, was born on May 21, 1999, and grew up in Lowell. He graduated from Lowell High School in June 2017 before pursuing his studies at Plymouth State University. There, he found love with his fiancée, Nicole DeCicco, who he was set to marry.

A passionate athlete, James excelled in football, wrestling, and lacrosse during his school years. He later served in the New Hampshire National Guard, where he reached the rank of Sergeant in December 2024. His commitment to his country was evident as he participated in natural disaster response efforts and worked to promote the Guard’s mission through local media.

Friends and family remember James not just for his athletic prowess but for his kindness and ability to make everyone feel welcome. He was known affectionately as “Smitty” among his peers in Lowell and “Jimbo” to friends from college. James’s life was a tapestry of adventures, from skiing down East Coast mountains to playing golf with finesse. His spirit resonated deeply with those who had the privilege to meet him.

The family has expressed immense gratitude for the support received from the local community during this heartbreaking time. Friends and family can pay their respects at the O’Donnell Funeral Home in Lowell on November 21, 2025, from 3-7 PM. A Funeral Mass will follow on November 22 at Immaculate Conception Church at 11:00 AM. Committal services will be scheduled later for family members.
