APCOA and MILES Launch Ticketless Parking to Ease Berlin’s Crushing Urban Parking Demand
Berlin, April 1 — Parking giant APCOA and car sharing leader MILES have teamed up to launch a groundbreaking ticketless parking pilot in Berlin’s city center, announcing a major push to cut inner-city traffic congestion and reduce parking headaches.
Starting this week, MILES customers can now start and end parking seamlessly at three APCOA-operated multi-storey car parks using automatic license plate recognition without any physical tickets or payment machines.
The launch covers three prime locations—the Kant Center and Augsburger Straße in Charlottenburg, and the Victoria Center at Ostkreuz station. Early reports show the system eliminates the need to hunt for car-sharing designated spots or grapple with parking meters, creating a smooth and rapid parking experience.
Cutting City Stress with Smart Parking Technology
This innovative parking solution—running entirely through the MILES app platform—lets drivers park in any free, regular space in the car parks, drastically speeding up the rental and parking process.
Stefanie Kochs, Head of Urban Hubs at APCOA Germany, said,
“The cooperation with MILES is another building block in improving the parking situation in urban city centre locations. Together, we ensure less stress, more comfort, and more time gained during the parking process and at the same time contribute to relieving the burden on city centres.”
Peter Kormany, Project Manager Business Development at MILES, added,
“By connecting the APCOA multi-storey car parks, we take the pressure off the streets and offer our users a reliable parking alternative in highly frequented locations.”
Why This Matters Now
Berlin is notoriously plagued by parking shortages and congestion caused by vehicles circling in search of spots, often referred to as “search traffic.” This pilot aims to shift parking habits from street-level to structured multi-storey garages, easing traffic flow, cutting emissions, and streamlining urban mobility.
For Berlin’s residents and commuters, this means significant time savings, less driving stress, and cleaner city air.
APCOA, Europe’s leading parking operator with a network spanning 13 countries and managing over 1.8 million parking spaces, uses its digital platform, APCOA FLOW, to connect parking locations into a smart, urban ecosystem. The pilot project reflects the company’s broader mission to integrate additional mobility services and environmental management into city infrastructure.
Expansion Under Review, Opportunities for U.S. Cities?
While currently limited to Berlin, an expansion to additional APCOA locations within and beyond Germany is under consideration. This development raises the prospect of smarter, ticketless parking systems crossing the Atlantic, offering lessons for urban areas across the United States frustrated by parking shortages and traffic jams.
Montana’s growing urban centers and cities grappling with similar parking pressures could benefit from innovations that reduce surface street congestion and improve parking reliability.
What’s Next?
The pilot’s success will be tracked closely over the coming months. If widely adopted, this tech-driven parking model promises to reshape urban mobility and parking dynamics, reducing the carbon footprint of city transport and improving daily life for millions.
For now, residents and visitors in Berlin’s busy inner city can experience the convenience first-hand as the new system rolls out.
Montana Insider will continue monitoring developments in smart urban parking innovations and their ripple effects on U.S. cities.
