Altadena Micro Farm Reopens After Eaton Fire Devastation

UPDATE: A beloved micro farm in Altadena has officially reopened to the community just months after being devastated by the Eaton Fire. The family-run farm, known as Experience Fable, invites visitors to engage with their rescued animals, including chickens, goats, and sheep, marking a significant milestone in their recovery journey.

In a remarkable turnaround, the Chavez family, led by White and Joey Chavez, is rebuilding their lives and farm with the aid of a $10,000 grant from the LISC LA’s Wildfire Relief Grant program, supported by Wells Fargo. This funding has been crucial in providing new fencing and establishing additional spaces for the animals, many of whom were saved during the inferno that destroyed their property.

White Chavez stated, “That grant came at the perfect time. Most of what you see here is what we had. All these guys have been on quite the journey,” referring to the array of animals that have returned home to their farm on Loma Alta Drive. The family had to evacuate and relocate approximately 70 animals to various locations, including Venice Beach and the LA Equestrian Center, before finding a temporary home in San Diego.

Now back in Altadena, the Chavez family is eager to create a welcoming environment for the community. “That’s the next step, is to find the right place to put all these guys so people can come to us on a regular basis,” White remarked. She emphasized their commitment to rebuilding in the foothills, stating, “This is home. Somewhere here in the foothills, nature, beautiful place, that’s the next step.”

Experience Fable plans to operate once a week for small local groups until a more permanent location is secured. This effort not only serves as a sanctuary for the animals but also fosters community engagement and healing following the chaos of the fire.

As the farm reopens, the Chavez family highlights the importance of community support in their recovery, inviting residents to reconnect with nature and the joy of farm life. This reopening is a beacon of hope for many affected by the Eaton Fire, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.

Stay tuned for more updates as Experience Fable continues to grow and adapt in the aftermath of this devastating event.
