4 Dead, 11 Injured as Speeding Car Crashes into Crowd

UPDATE: A tragic incident in Ybor City, Florida has left four people dead and 11 injured after a speeding car crashed into a crowd early this morning. The devastating event occurred around 12:40 a.m. as police attempted to stop a reckless driver, who is now facing multiple felony charges.

Authorities report that the chaos began when police air units spotted two vehicles racing westbound on Hillsborough Avenue towards Interstate 275. One vehicle broke off during the chase, while the other, driven by 22-year-old Silas Sampson, sped south on I-275. The Florida Highway Patrol attempted an unsuccessful traffic stop and even attempted a PIT maneuver to halt the vehicle.

As the chase continued, police disengaged when the suspect entered Ybor City. The speeding car then plowed through a crowd near Bradley’s bar, tragically hitting over a dozen people who were outside. Reports indicate that as of 5:30 a.m., one person remains in critical condition, while eight others are being treated for stable injuries at local hospitals. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw confirmed that all victims were adults over the age of 20. Following the incident, Silas Sampson was arrested at the scene and is now facing eight felony charges, including four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated fleeing with serious bodily injury. Notably, court records reveal that Sampson had previously been cited for speeding in Hillsborough County, where he was recorded driving at 99 mph in a 70 mph zone just two months ago.
