UPDATE: A tragic snowmobile crash in Washburn, Maine, has claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl and left a 17-year-old boy with serious injuries. The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on January 13, 2024, according to the Maine Warden Service.
Witnesses report that the snowmobile was traveling at a high rate of speed when it failed to navigate a 90-degree turn on Story Street, striking a curb. The vehicle flipped over, ejecting both teenagers before colliding with the side of a nearby house. Tragically, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
The boy, who was also wearing a helmet, suffered multiple injuries and was initially transported to Cary Medical Center in Caribou. He was later moved to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for further treatment.
Authorities are withholding the names of both individuals as the investigation continues. Mark Latti, spokesperson for the Maine Warden Service, confirmed that the incident is under thorough investigation, emphasizing the need for safety on snowmobiles.
