Trade Low, Trade High: Key NHL Players to Consider Now

As the NHL season unfolds, fantasy hockey managers are already evaluating potential trade candidates. With several high-profile players underperforming early in the season, the opportunity for savvy trades has emerged. Managers are advised to consider both underperforming stars to acquire and players who may be more valuable in trade discussions than on their rosters.
Targeting Underperforming Stars
One player to consider is Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks. After a lackluster start, with just two assists and four shots in four games, Pettersson’s performance has frustrated both fantasy managers and fans. Yet, he remains just 26 years old and boasts a ceiling that includes a prior season of 102 points. Former Canuck Jannik Hansen emphasized the need for Pettersson to step up for the Canucks to succeed this season. If fantasy managers are looking for potential upside, acquiring Pettersson could be worthwhile, particularly if their roster needs enhancement.
Another prominent name to consider is Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals. Known for his slow starts, Ovechkin has managed only two goals in his first dozen games in past seasons but still finished strong. His determination to chase milestone goals, including the coveted 900, suggests he is not winding down. With his recent recovery from a minor injury and increased shot frequency, Ovechkin could quickly regain form.
Also on this list is Artemi Panarin of the New York Rangers, who has struggled with just two assists through six matches. Speculation surrounds his performance, possibly due to lingering injuries or distractions from contract negotiations. However, his history of scoring—averaging 1.27 points per game since the 2016-17 season—indicates that he is capable of turning things around. With upcoming games against teams like the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota Wild, now may be the time to make an offer for Panarin.
Defenseman Evan Bouchard from the Edmonton Oilers is another player to watch. Despite a rocky beginning to the season and no points in his first games, Bouchard’s role on the top power play and heavy minutes played suggest he will find his scoring touch again. Fellow teammate Mattias Ekholm believes Bouchard will improve, making him a reasonable trade target for those looking to strengthen their defense.
In goal, Darcuy Kuemper of the Los Angeles Kings presents a compelling case. Despite concerns over the team’s recent performance, including a three-game losing streak, Kuemper’s past accolades, such as his nomination for the Vezina Trophy, signal that he can bounce back. After recovering from a minor lower-body injury, he could be a valuable asset for teams needing goaltending.
Players to Consider Trading Away
On the flip side, fantasy managers may want to consider trading away Carter Verhaeghe of the Florida Panthers. Following a strong performance in last season’s playoffs, Verhaeghe’s regular-season stats have not matched the hype. With key players like Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk out due to injury, Verhaeghe’s value may not be as high as it once was.
Similarly, Frank Vatrano of the Anaheim Ducks has not capitalized on his past success, averaging only 12 minutes on the third line and struggling defensively. With a significant drop in ice time and performance, he may not be worth holding onto.
Lastly, Brock Faber of the Minnesota Wild, while a talented player, is currently overshadowed by rookie Zeev Buium, who is leading the power play. With Faber’s role diminished, trading him while his reputation remains strong could be beneficial for fantasy managers.
In conclusion, navigating the early trade landscape in fantasy hockey requires both keen observation and strategic foresight. By targeting underperforming players with potential for resurgence and considering the trade value of those whose stock may have peaked, fantasy managers can position themselves for success as the season progresses.
