Red Car Crashes into Oakland Boxing Club, Damaging Historic Ring

A red Honda crashed into Lightning’s Boxing Club in East Oakland on March 15, 2024, causing significant damage to a historic boxing ring once used by former world champion George Foreman. The accident occurred when the vehicle collided with another car on MacArthur Boulevard before careening into the gym located at 5845 MacArthur Blvd.

The impact blew out the gym’s front doors and displaced the vintage ring, which has been a central feature of the club since its purchase by owner Kris “Lightning” Lopez in 2009. Lopez described the ring as a cherished piece of boxing history, having hosted champions like Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Wilfred Benitez. He estimated that the crash twisted the ring by approximately 15 degrees, knocked over the ring stairs, and damaged the gym’s signage.

Photographs shared with local news outlet KTVU show the red Honda wedged against the ring while a second blue sedan was removed by a tow truck. Following the crash, the driver fled the scene on foot, prompting an investigation by the Oakland Police Department.

Community Impact and Response

Lightning’s Boxing Club serves as more than just a gym; it acts as a vital community resource for local youth, especially for students from Unity High School. Lopez, a former Golden Gloves champion, emphasizes the club’s mission of mentoring underprivileged teens and providing a safe environment for them to gather after school.

In light of the damage, trainers at the club are currently adjusting schedules and classes to accommodate the ongoing repairs. Lopez is dedicated to stabilizing the historic ring, ensuring that young fighters still have a place to train and learn.

To assist with the costs of repairs, Lopez and gym members have initiated a GoFundMe campaign, appealing to the community for support. The club’s website highlights its commitment to youth programs and ongoing mentorship for local teens.

Preserving History

As the investigation continues, Lopez remains focused on restoring the club to its former glory. He recognizes the importance of the historic ring, not just to the gym but also to the community it serves.

Updates on the situation will be shared as the repairs progress, with Lopez determined to keep the spirit of Lightning’s Boxing Club alive. The community stands behind him, reflecting the strong ties that bind the club to the neighborhood.
