The Los Angeles Rams’ recent trade with the Atlanta Falcons could significantly impact the team’s future success. During a news conference following the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Rams head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead discussed their decision to trade pick No. 26 to the Falcons. In return, the Rams received a first-round pick in 2026, a second-round pick (No. 46), and a seventh-round pick (No. 242) in 2025, while the Falcons selected outside linebacker James Pearce Jr., who has made an impressive start to his career with 8.5 sacks this season.
Pearce’s performance has made headlines, as he has recorded at least a half-sack in seven consecutive games, marking the second-longest streak by a rookie since the NFL began officially tracking sacks in 1982, according to ESPN Research. The Rams’ trade strategy reflects a shift in their approach, moving from a period of not having a first-round pick for seven years to now securing two first-round picks in the 2026 draft, which will take place from April 23 to 25.
As the Rams currently hold the 28th pick, they could leverage the Falcons’ pick, which may land in the top ten, to either select a quarterback for the future or continue to bolster the roster around veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. McVay acknowledged the flexibility this gives the team, stating, “To be able to have two first-round picks gives you flexibility and the ability to move around or identify players that you would maybe want that you’re realistically in the range that they would be projected to go.”
While the Rams prepare to face the Falcons on “Monday Night Football” at 20:15 ET, their focus on the upcoming draft is tempered by the team’s current performance. With a record of 11-4, they are gearing up for a postseason run, aiming to return to the Super Bowl for the first time since their victory in the 2021 season.
Historically, the Rams have utilized their draft picks to build a competitive team. The absence of first-round picks previously allowed them to make strategic moves, including trading for key players like quarterback Jared Goff in 2016, wide receiver Brandin Cooks in 2018, and cornerback Jalen Ramsey in 2020 and 2021. This strategy culminated in their Super Bowl LVI championship.
Now, with the Rams’ draft position improving, McVay’s mindset appears to be evolving. He mentioned the notorious motto “F— them picks,” which Snead famously sported on a shirt during the Super Bowl parade, indicating a shift towards more balanced roster management. “We look at all avenues to try to be able to shape out the most competitive roster,” McVay said.
The team is also benefiting from salary cap flexibility, with over $81 million available in 2026, ranking sixth in the NFL, according to Over the Cap. This financial maneuverability will allow the Rams to extend contracts for key players from the 2023 draft, including wide receiver Puka Nacua and outside linebacker Byron Young.
As the Rams contemplate their long-term plans, the question remains regarding Stafford’s future. At 37 years old, Stafford has restructured his deal for the coming season. He has been cautious about making promises about his career length, indicating that he prefers to take it year by year. “I’m trying to play at a high level as long as I possibly can,” he stated during minicamp.
This season, Stafford has excelled, throwing for 4,179 yards with 40 touchdowns and just five interceptions, making him a top contender for the MVP award as the regular season concludes. He currently ranks third in passing yards and leads the league in touchdowns.
McVay praised Stafford’s performance, emphasizing his crucial role in elevating his teammates. “He’s been outstanding for the Rams this season,” McVay noted. With Stafford’s career accomplishments, including three seasons with 40 or more touchdown passes, he is tied for the most in NFL history alongside Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady.
As the Rams aim for another playoff berth, the implications of their trade with the Falcons may not only shape their immediate roster but also lay the groundwork for future success, whether they draft a quarterback or continue to build around their current stars. The upcoming draft and their strategic trades highlight a promising outlook for the franchise in the years to come.
