The New Orleans Pelicans triumphed over the Utah Jazz with a score of 115-105 on March 2, 2024, marking their fourth consecutive victory. This win was achieved despite the early exit of star player Zion Williamson, who left the game in the second quarter due to a right ankle injury.
Williamson managed to score four points and provide two assists in just 11 minutes before leaving the court. Following the game, Pelicans interim coach James Borrego described the injury as a “tweak” but hoped to have further information soon. The coach expressed his optimism, indicating that the injury may not be serious.
In Williamson’s absence, Saddiq Bey stepped up significantly, contributing 24 points to the Pelicans’ victory. Bey’s performance was impressive, especially after his recent 42-point outing in a previous game against the Jazz. He shot 7 for 16 from the field and made three of eight attempts from beyond the arc, alongside a solid 7 for 10 from the free-throw line.
The Pelicans showcased a strong team effort, with Jeremiah Fears and Bryce McGowens each adding 18 points. Additionally, Herbert Jones scored 17 points, with ten of those coming in the first half, while Jordan Poole contributed 11 points. Fears also recorded 11 rebounds and five assists, aiding New Orleans in winning six of their last eight games.
On the other hand, the Jazz struggled to find their rhythm, suffering their fifth consecutive loss. Isaiah Collier led Utah with 21 points. Other notable contributions came from Keyonte George, who returned from a ten-game absence and scored 17 points, while Elijah Harkless and Ace Bailey added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
The Pelicans dominated the first half, closing the second quarter with a decisive 15-0 run, leading to a substantial 65-40 advantage at halftime. New Orleans shot 50% from the field in the first half, while the Jazz struggled with a shooting percentage of just 26.9%, making only 14 of their 52 attempts.
In the second half, Utah attempted to mount a comeback, narrowing the deficit to 16 points by the end of the third quarter. They opened the fourth quarter with a nine-point run, closing the gap to seven. However, the Pelicans responded with an 8-0 run that reestablished their lead, and they maintained control for the remainder of the game.
The Pelicans were without Trey Murphy III, who missed his fifth consecutive game due to a right shoulder injury. In addition, Dejounte Murray and Yves Missi were also sidelined. The Jazz, meanwhile, were missing key players including Jaren Jackson Jr., Walker Kessler, Lauri Markkanen, Jusuf Nurkic, and Vince Williams Jr.
As the Pelicans continue their season, the health of Williamson will be a critical factor to monitor in the coming days.
