McCann Tech Golf Team Secures Seventh at State Championships

The McCann Tech golf team made a notable impression at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division III State Golf Tournament, finishing in seventh place among a competitive field of twelve teams. The tournament took place on October 16, 2023, at the Blissful Meadows Golf Club in Uxbridge, following the team’s commendable third-place finish at the Western Mass. tournament two weeks prior.

McCann Tech’s performance at the state level was highlighted by a combined score of 348, which placed them just one stroke behind Tewksbury, who secured sixth place. Their achievement marked them as the top team from the Western Massachusetts region. The scoring foursome for McCann Tech included Gabe Thomas, Nolan Booth, Landon Leclair, and Kale Kondel.

Old Rochester dominated the tournament, finishing first with a total score of 323. The individual state champion was Aidan Connell from Seekonk, who achieved a remarkable score of 74, two over par.

Gabe Thomas led McCann Tech with a score of 85, placing 26th overall. He showcased impressive consistency throughout the round, recording ten pars, including six consecutive pars from the sixth to the eleventh hole. Nolan Booth closely followed, finishing with a score of 86, while Landon Leclair and Kale Kondel scored 87 and 90, respectively.

Both Leclair and Kondel demonstrated their skills with birdies during the competition. Kondel achieved birdies on the par-4 first and the par-4 seventeenth holes, while Leclair birdied the 312-yard par-4 seventh hole. In addition to the main quartet, teammates Mason Rondeau and Nick Varellas also competed for the Hornets.

In contrast, Monty Tech, the Western Mass. champion, finished in ninth place with a score of 357, while Athol, the runner-up, scored 396. Ryley Regan, the individual champion from Hopkins Academy, tied for seventeenth place with a score of 84.

The McCann Tech golf team’s performance at the state championship reflects their dedication and talent, making them a noteworthy contender in future tournaments. Their journey from Western Mass. champions to state competitors showcases the depth of talent within the team and the competitive spirit of high school golf in Massachusetts.
