The Orlando Magic secured a 128-118 victory against the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday, marking a successful return for Moe Wagner after over a year of rehabilitation from a torn ACL in his left knee. The game, held at the Kia Center, featured a spirited atmosphere as fans celebrated Wagner’s comeback, but the Magic had to overcome a lack of defensive intensity for much of the contest.
Orlando started strong, buoyed by the energy surrounding Wagner’s return. However, they struggled defensively, allowing New Orleans to dominate the third quarter with a remarkable 39-point performance. The Pelicans accumulated 98 points through the first three quarters, but the Magic made a decisive comeback, outscoring their opponents 37-20 in the final 12 minutes.
Despite the Pelicans’ balanced attack, featuring six players scoring in double figures and led by Zion Williamson with 22 points, Orlando’s offensive stars shone brighter. Desmond Bane led the team with 27 points, followed closely by Anthony Black with 26 and Paolo Banchero contributing 23. Their combined effort proved crucial in the team’s ten-point victory.
The Magic, now holding a record of 22 wins and 18 losses, capitalized on New Orleans’ mistakes, scoring 27 points off 16 turnovers. The Pelicans, with a disappointing record of 9-33, managed to score 25 points through 13 takeaways but fell short in critical moments.
Wagner’s Emotional Return
Wagner’s return to the court was met with a standing ovation as he entered the game with 2:43 remaining in the first quarter. His first points came in the second quarter, where he converted an and-one opportunity, marking his return to action after 386 days. Although on a minutes restriction, Wagner made a notable impact, finishing with eight points, two rebounds, and two assists in just ten minutes.
Orlando was still without key players Franz Wagner (left high ankle sprain) and Jalen Suggs (right knee MCL bruise) for this matchup. Additionally, Wendell Carter Jr. was ruled out just before tip-off due to a right hip strain. Rookie Noah Penda stepped into the starting role for the second consecutive game, joining Goga Bitadze, Banchero, Bane, and Black on the court.
Bane made an immediate impact by scoring five of the team’s first ten points, hitting an early three-pointer and driving to the basket. He totaled 13 points in the first half and added another ten after halftime. Black also had a strong outing, scoring 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting in the first half, alongside seven assists and three three-pointers.
Banchero displayed his aggressiveness, contributing eight rebounds and eight assists while also facing difficulties with four turnovers. Bitadze provided solid support with a double-double performance.
Shifting Dynamics and Rookie Contributions
Despite a quiet first half, Tristan da Silva found his rhythm in the third quarter, sinking four three-pointers to finish with 16 points in 19 minutes. Rookie Penda made an immediate impact by scoring in the first quarter, ultimately recording nine points and six rebounds over 38 minutes. First-round pick Jase Richardson added a three-pointer in limited play, contributing to the team dynamics.
