Joe Flacco Faces First-Day Nerves with Bengals’ Star Receivers
Joe Flacco recently joined the Cincinnati Bengals after a challenging stint with the Cleveland Browns, where he struggled with just two touchdowns and six interceptions in four starts. The 40-year-old quarterback faced a significant challenge as he transitioned to a division rival while trying to keep the Bengals’ playoff hopes alive without star quarterback Joe Burrow. Flacco’s initial nerves were palpable when he first met his new receiving corps, including standout players Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
In a recent episode of the Fitz & Whit podcast, Flacco candidly shared his feelings about his first throws to Chase and Higgins. “I know I’m 40 years old,” he told host Andrew Whitworth, “but the first couple of times I threw to Ja’Marr and Tee, I was a little bit nervous. I’m like, man, I want them to know…” Flacco’s admission resonated with Whitworth, who humorously interjected, “I want them to respect me, damn it.” Flacco agreed, expressing a desire to demonstrate his skills and earn their respect.
Despite his experience, Flacco’s nerves manifested in an early misstep. He recalled a particular throw to Chase during a practice session, where he misjudged the route. “I missed him, and I was just like, ‘Oh man, he thinks I suck,’” he reflected. This moment of self-doubt prompted an internal dialogue, leading him to remind himself to focus and trust his abilities. “I was like, ‘Damn man, stop overthinking it. Just throw the damn ball,’” he said.
Flacco’s breakthrough came when he realized the exceptional talent surrounding him. “Just put it somewhere around them, and they’ll make you look good,” he quipped. This newfound confidence translated into impressive performances on the field, where he has revitalized the Bengals’ offense. In his two starts since joining the team, Flacco completed 60 of 92 passes (65.2%) for 561 yards, five touchdowns, and no turnovers.
After a solid debut against the Green Bay Packers, Flacco delivered a standout performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers, throwing for 342 yards and three touchdowns, achieving a passer rating of 108.6. His efforts helped the Bengals halt a four-game losing streak, providing a glimmer of hope for fans and teammates alike.
As Burrow is expected to return for the final games of the regular season, Flacco’s resurgence could play a pivotal role in the Bengals’ playoff aspirations. If he maintains his current form, the team might find themselves in a position to compete for a postseason spot, showcasing a remarkable turnaround for the veteran quarterback.
Flacco’s journey illustrates the complex emotions athletes face, especially when adapting to new environments. His experience serves as a reminder that even seasoned professionals can experience nerves, but with perseverance and the right mindset, they can overcome challenges and excel.
