Jaxson Dart Returns as Giants’ Starting QB for MNF Against Patriots

Jaxson Dart is officially back as the starting quarterback for the New York Giants, gearing up to take on the New England Patriots on “Monday Night Football.” Interim coach Mike Kafka confirmed on Friday that Dart will handle all first-team practice reps this week after being cleared from concussion protocol. Dart had missed the previous two games, during which Jameis Winston filled in as the starter.

Dart expressed his eagerness to return to play, stating, “I’m ready. I’ve been waiting for it.” He highlighted the significance of primetime games, saying he has circled them on his calendar. “I’m excited to go out there, compete at a high level and do everything in my power to rally these guys to put our team in the best situation when the clock hits zero that we’re going to come out with a win.”

The Giants currently hold a challenging record of 2-10, having dropped six consecutive games. In contrast, the Patriots are riding high with a nine-game winning streak. Dart’s return comes as the Giants aim to end a franchise-record 12-game road losing streak.

Dart had been close to returning last week but did not clear the concussion protocol at that time. He acknowledged the need for caution moving forward, noting that he averages almost ten hits per game. The rookie quarterback sustained a concussion on November 9, 2023, during a game against the Chicago Bears, marking the fourth time in eight games that he required evaluation for a concussion. This situation has kept him off the field significantly.

“Moving forward, I have to be more available for this team,” Dart stated. He clarified misconceptions about his concussion evaluations, explaining that prior tests were triggered by symptoms like being out of breath rather than direct hits to the head. Nevertheless, he emphasized the importance of remaining on the field for his team.

Dart’s ability to adapt to the professional level is also a focus for him. “I’m still getting used to this game. I’m getting used to this speed, this level,” he said. He reflected on his college playing style, where he rarely slid, and acknowledged the need for greater responsibility in the open field. Despite this, he believed he was playing smart during his last outing, where he followed a game plan that included six designed runs.

Regarding his previous injury, Dart praised the Giants’ medical staff, stating he was not in a suitable state to continue playing after the injury. He returned for two more plays before being pulled from the game.

Monday’s game will be Dart’s first without former head coach Brian Daboll, who was released from his position on November 10, 2023. During his first press conference since the injury, Dart expressed gratitude for Daboll’s influence on his career. “I have all the respect in the world for him. He’s an incredible offensive mind,” he said.

Dart’s recognition of the challenges ahead reflects a commitment to improving as the Giants prepare for their critical matchup against a formidable Patriots team. As he steps back onto the field, all eyes will be on him to see if he can guide his team to a much-needed victory.
