The University of Minnesota Gophers have officially finalized their coaching staff for the 2026 season. This announcement highlights the return of former offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover, who will serve as the assistant offensive line coach. Limegrover, who previously held the position of offensive coordinator and offensive line coach from 2011 to 2015, brings a wealth of experience to the team, particularly in bolstering the offensive strategies under head coach P.J. Fleck.
Limegrover, 57, comes back to Minnesota after coaching roles at several institutions, including Kent State, where he was the offensive line coach in 2023-2024. He also had stints at Arkansas State, Michigan, and Penn State, where he significantly contributed to their offensive line performance. During his first tenure with the Gophers, Limegrover was instrumental in improving offensive rankings, showcasing his ability to develop talent and create effective game plans.
Notable Staff Changes and Returning Coaches
Alongside Limegrover, the Gophers are welcoming back former players Isaac Fruechte and Mo Ibrahim. Fruechte, who played at Minnesota from 2012 to 2014, will take on the role of wide receivers coach. He had an impressive college career, recording 50 receptions for 702 yards and three touchdowns. Ibrahim, a standout running back for the Gophers from 2018 to 2022, is set to coach running backs after setting multiple program records, including career rushing yards of 4,668 and total touchdowns of 53.
In addition to these notable returns, C.J. Robbins has been appointed as the new defensive line coach, following his work as the rush ends coach in 2025. Bobby April III will step into the role of rush ends coach for the upcoming season. The Gophers have also secured Daniel Da Prato as their new special teams coordinator, coming from a position as associate head coach and special teams coordinator at New Mexico.
The coaching lineup continues to evolve with the addition of Travis Moore as assistant defensive line coach and senior defensive assistant Bryan Nardo. Caleb Richardson will support the offensive line as an assistant.
The Gophers’ coaching changes align with their strategic vision for the upcoming season, aiming to enhance their competitive edge in the Big Ten Conference. As the team prepares for the 2026 season, these appointments reflect a blend of experience and familiarity with the program, positioning Minnesota for success on the field.
