Dwayne Johnson, widely known as The Rock, did not secure his first Golden Globe award on March 10, 2024. He lost out to Wagner Moura, who won for his portrayal in The Secret Agent. Johnson was nominated for his role in The Smashing Machine, a film that chronicles the life of former MMA and UFC star Mark Kerr.
The competition for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama was fierce. Alongside Johnson and Moura, nominees included Oscar Isaac for Frankenstein, Michael B. Jordan for Sinners, Joel Edgerton for Train Dreams, and Jeremy Allen White for Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere.
In addition to Johnson’s nomination, Emily Blunt received a nod for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Dawn Staples in The Smashing Machine. Unfortunately for her as well, Blunt also did not take home the award. The accolade went to Teyana Taylor for her performance in One Battle After Another.
Despite the acclaim associated with the nominations, The Smashing Machine struggled at the box office, garnering only $21 million in revenue. This underperformance may have impacted the film’s visibility during the awards season.
Looking ahead, Dwayne Johnson has an array of upcoming projects. He is set to star in a live-action version of Moana, which is currently in post-production. Other anticipated films include Jumanji 3, Fast X: Part 2, The King, and Lizard Music. Additionally, Johnson is slated to collaborate with acclaimed director Martin Scorsese on an untitled film, further expanding his cinematic footprint.
The Golden Globe Awards serve as a significant platform for recognizing talent in the film industry, and the competition remains intense. While Johnson did not walk away with the award this year, his future projects promise to keep his fans engaged and eager for more of his performances.
