Auburn Hires DeMarcus Van Dyke as New Cornerbacks Coach

Auburn University has appointed DeMarcus Van Dyke as its new cornerbacks coach, a significant move for the football program under head coach Alex Golesh. This hiring represents a strategic effort to enhance Auburn’s defensive capabilities as the team prepares for competitive seasons ahead.

Golesh expressed his enthusiasm about the decision, stating, “We are thrilled to bring Coach DVD to Auburn. He has an elite ability to build genuine relationships with his players and develop them at the highest level.” He emphasized that Van Dyke’s experience in the NFL will provide invaluable insights to the team, allowing Auburn to attract top talent in key recruiting areas.

Before joining Auburn, Van Dyke spent the past two seasons as the cornerbacks coach at the University of South Florida (USF), where he played a crucial role in the team’s defensive improvements. In his tenure, USF achieved 16 wins and saw a nearly seven-point drop in average points allowed per game from his first to second year. Under Van Dyke’s guidance, the Bulls ranked seventh nationally in turnovers gained in 2025, leading the American Athletic Conference (AAC) with 14 interceptions, the highest total since 2017.

During his time at USF, cornerback DeShawn Rucker earned recognition as First Team All-AAC, tallying 55 tackles and four passes defended. This success reflects Van Dyke’s ability to develop players and improve team performance.

Prior to his role at USF, Van Dyke served as cornerbacks coach at Florida International University (FIU) and held various positions at his alma mater, the University of Miami, from 2018 to 2022. His coaching journey began in 2017 at ASA College, where he was also the cornerbacks coach.

Van Dyke’s playing career adds to his credibility as a coach. He was selected in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders and played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs, over six seasons. He participated in 25 games, recording 17 tackles and one interception.

Originally from Miami Gardens, Florida, Van Dyke’s personal life includes his wife, Kiawana, and their two children, DeMarcus Jr. and Kai. His connection to the Miami area, coupled with his extensive coaching and playing experience, positions him as a promising addition to Auburn’s coaching staff.

As Auburn prepares for the upcoming season, the addition of DeMarcus Van Dyke as cornerbacks coach marks a pivotal step in strengthening the team’s defense and enhancing its competitive edge in college football.
