Tributes Pour in for Judith Ernst, Pioneer of Montessori Education

Judith Ann Ernst, a respected figure in education and a cherished member of the South Bay community, passed away unexpectedly on October 4, 2025, at her home in Redondo Beach, California. She was 81 years old and leaves behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire many.

Born on December 20, 1943, in Manhattan Beach, California, Judith, affectionately known as Judy, spent her entire life in the South Bay area. A proud graduate of Mira Costa High School in 1961, she went on to pursue further education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her commitment to education was evident early in her career.

At the age of 24, Judy founded the Montessori School of Manhattan Beach in 1968, a groundbreaking achievement for a woman in business at that time. Starting with just twelve students, including her three children, she established an environment where curiosity and kindness could thrive. Judy’s pioneering spirit and dedication to the Montessori method have left a lasting impact on countless families and educators.

Judy was known for her adventurous spirit and zest for life. She enjoyed free-diving with her husband, John Ernst, and was recognized for her elegant fashion sense. Always impeccably dressed, Judy embraced every opportunity for self-expression and style. Additionally, she developed a passion for tennis, frequently participating in tournaments alongside John and their son, Jeff. Her enthusiasm for the sport remained strong until her later years.

The loss of Judy is deeply felt among her family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, John, and her children: Jeff, Greg, Lynn, Darlyn, and Leila. Her legacy continues through her eleven grandchildren. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Ardith and Herral Jones; her daughter, Nadine; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

Judy’s life exemplified courage, curiosity, and compassion. Her influence on the educational landscape and the lives she touched will not be forgotten. A celebration of her life is scheduled to take place on November 2nd, providing an opportunity for family, friends, and the community to honor her memory and contributions.
