Innovator Captures Light Speed with 2 Billion FPS Laser Video

In a remarkable technological feat, inventor Brian Haidet has successfully recorded laser beams at an astounding 2 billion frames per second. This achievement, showcased on his AlphaPhoenix channel, offers a unique glimpse into the behavior of light, although the video consists of a single pixel image that is repeated to create the final effect.
Haidet’s latest project builds upon his previous work from December 2022, when he developed a camera capable of capturing footage at 1,000,000,000 fps. To reach the new frame rate, he entirely re-engineered his recording apparatus, upgrading critical components including motors, hardware, and software. This comprehensive overhaul aimed to enhance both the speed and resolution of his recordings, allowing for a more detailed visualization of light phenomena.
One of the most intriguing effects observed in this experiment is the apparent change in the speed of light depending on its direction relative to the camera. When light reflects off fog particles closer to the lens, it appears to travel faster than light that bounces off particles further away. This phenomenon essentially visualizes the principles of special relativity, demonstrating how light interacts with its environment in a way that is both captivating and educational.
Haidet’s experiments take place in his garage, reflecting a hands-on approach to scientific exploration. The project not only serves as a testament to his ingenuity but also highlights the potential for individuals to push the boundaries of technology and understanding from their own homes.
For those interested in delving deeper into the intricacies of this experiment, Haidet has provided additional material that explores the technical aspects and implications of his findings. This innovative work paves the way for further exploration in the fields of physics and optics, showcasing the power of creativity and determination in scientific inquiry.
