U.S. Embassy Warns Citizens of Rising Violence in Guatemala

The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala has issued a security alert advising American citizens to exercise heightened caution due to escalating violence in the country. This advisory follows a series of coordinated attacks targeting police forces and an emergency declaration by President Bernardo Arévalo. The embassy’s warning emphasizes the need for vigilance in light of the tense security situation.

In a statement released on Sunday, the embassy noted that armed assaults against police have occurred in various areas of Guatemala City. Although the shelter-in-place order for embassy staff has been lifted, the security risks remain significant. The embassy encourages U.S. nationals to stay informed through local news sources, avoid large gatherings, and maintain a low profile to reduce potential risks.

Travelers are advised to review their personal security protocols rigorously and limit non-essential movement throughout the country. This alert comes amid serious disturbances, including gang-related attacks on police following coordinated prison riots. These events have prompted President Arévalo to declare a state of emergency, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The emergency declaration highlights the presence of organized actions by gangs, known as ‘maras’, against state security forces. Criminal organizations such as Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) are heavily involved in this violence, both of which are designated as terrorist organizations by Guatemala and the United States.

From January to November 2025, Guatemala welcomed over 2.9 million international visitors, underscoring its popularity as a tourist destination. Nevertheless, the recent surge in violence necessitates a cautious approach for anyone planning to travel to the region.

The U.S. Embassy’s statement condemned the attacks, asserting that individuals involved in terrorist activities, along with their collaborators, have no place in the region. The embassy also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of both American citizens and the Guatemalan populace.

The U.S. State Department currently categorizes Guatemala at ‘Level 3: Reconsider Travel’. This advisory serves as a significant warning for potential visitors. The State Department employs a four-tiered system to evaluate travel advisories, ranging from ‘Exercise Normal Precautions’ (Level 1) to ‘Do Not Travel’ (Level 4). Levels 2 and 3 indicate intermediate risk assessments.

The U.S. government continues to support Guatemala’s security forces in their efforts to combat violence and restore order. As the situation evolves, American citizens in Guatemala are urged to remain alert and prioritize their safety.
