U.S. Senator Cory Booker married real estate executive Alexis Lewis on November 24, 2023, following a whirlwind romance that began in May 2024. The New Jersey Democrat announced the news via social media, sharing that the couple exchanged vows in two significant locations: Newark and Washington, D.C. “Hearts full and so grateful,” Booker wrote alongside a series of photos capturing their Newark ceremony.
The couple legally wed at a Newark courthouse, officiated by Judge Julien Xavier Neals. Their celebration continued later that evening with an interfaith ceremony and a family-only reception in D.C. The event was officiated by Reverend Dr. David Jefferson Sr. from Newark’s Metropolitan Baptist Church and Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz of Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills, both of whom have long-standing friendships with Booker.
Booker and Lewis, who both have roots in Washington D.C., currently reside in Newark, where Booker served as mayor from 2006 to 2013. The couple, who have been dating for approximately a year and a half, first met through a mutual friend noted for making successful introductions.
Their initial date in May led to a memorable second outing that included dining at Mompou, a tapas restaurant in Newark, attending the Broadway musical “Suffs” in New York City, and strolling through Newark, where Booker shared personal stories of his life. The couple’s first kiss occurred outside Newark’s Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, marking a significant moment in their relationship.
On August 24, 2023, Booker proposed to Lewis during a trip to Kauai, Hawaii, where local musicians serenaded them with Mariah Carey’s “Dreamlover.” In his announcement, Booker expressed profound gratitude, stating, “Alexis is one of the greatest unearned blessings of my life.” He highlighted how she has helped him find balance and joy in building a nurturing home.
Lewis holds the position of director of investments at Brasa Capital Management, a Los Angeles-based real estate investment firm, and has previously worked for former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. She boasts academic credentials from New York University and Cornell University.
At their Newark ceremony, the couple’s parents served as witnesses. Unfortunately, Booker’s father, Cary Booker, passed away in 2013, which added a poignant note to the occasion. Following the ceremony, the families celebrated with Italian pastries from Calandra’s Bakery and a vegan chocolate chip cookie dough cake from Papa Ganache Project, a local bakery.
Days later in Washington D.C., under a huppah, the couple received blessings from both a rabbi and a pastor as family members looked on. Each tier of their wedding cake was specially selected by the mothers of the bride and groom, featuring flavors like almond with raspberry, chocolate with chocolate ganache, and funfetti.
The couple kept their wedding plans largely private until the announcement, which was first reported by the New York Times. Their nuptials come just eight months after Booker made headlines for delivering the longest individual Senate speech in history. As he continues his role as New Jersey’s senator, he is also being considered as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential election.
