WVU Parkersburg celebrated the achievements of its Class of 2025 during the Fall Commencement Ceremony on December 13, 2025. Held at the institution’s campus in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the event honored students who completed their academic programs in the fall semester. United States Senator Shelley Moore Capito served as the commencement speaker, providing insights and encouragement to the graduates.
In her welcoming address, Trista Scarberry, president of the Student Government Association, highlighted the significance of the graduates’ journey. She urged attendees to reflect on their perseverance and personal growth while at WVU Parkersburg. Scarberry emphasized that their degrees symbolize not only academic success but also the strength and relationships cultivated throughout their studies. She concluded her remarks with a motivational quote from her parents: “Shoot for the moon, and if you fall short, you’ll still be a shining star.”
Senator Capito, the first female senator in West Virginia’s history, inspired graduates to “look up” toward future opportunities and the impact they can have on their communities. She spoke about the importance of service, leadership, and gratitude, particularly acknowledging the sacrifices made by military personnel and health care workers. Capito encouraged graduates to leverage their talents and skills as they enter the workforce while remaining connected to the values of West Virginia.
Dr. Torie Jackson, president of WVU Parkersburg, congratulated the graduates for their dedication and hard work. She reinforced the idea that while their degrees are a significant achievement, the true measure of their success will be the relationships they build in the future. “Degrees open doors, but relationships build futures,” Jackson stated. She added, “Your legacy will be measured by the people whose lives are different because you were in them.”
The ceremony recognized a total of 423 graduates, awarding 467 degrees, including associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and certificates to students who completed their programs in August and December 2025. A total of 137 graduates participated in the commencement ceremony.
