Texas First Lady Launches Prayer Initiative Against Human Trafficking

First Lady Cecilia Abbott has initiated a call to action for Texans to unite against human trafficking. The launch of the sixth annual Week of Prayer to End Human Trafficking, part of the Governor’s Response Against Child Exploitation (GRACE) initiative, runs from January 5 to January 11, 2025. This interfaith event coincides with Human Trafficking Prevention Month, aiming to mobilize the faith-based community to engage in prayer, enhance awareness of human trafficking, and clarify their roles in preventing exploitation and supporting survivors.

In her announcement, First Lady Abbott emphasized the collective strength of the community, stating, “Nothing is stronger than Texans standing together through prayer and action.” She urged individuals to dedicate time during the week to join GRACE in its mission to protect the vulnerable and combat exploitation. Such community efforts are viewed as essential for providing the support, healing, and justice that victims of human trafficking urgently need.

Daily Themes and Community Engagement

Each day of the observance features specific prayer themes, focusing on various aspects of the fight against human trafficking. These include intentions to expose exploiters, enhance community awareness, support trauma-informed investigations, and promote healing for survivors. The comprehensive list of daily intentions illustrates the event’s multifaceted approach to addressing human trafficking, encompassing both legal and emotional dimensions.

Additionally, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) is actively involved in promoting this initiative. Audrey O’Neill, the DFPS Commissioner, along with Blanca Lance, the Director of Human Trafficking, has encouraged public participation in the week-long observance. They also announced the release of the 2026 Human Trafficking Prevention and Awareness Month guide, which includes educational resources and community tools designed to empower Texans in their efforts against this critical issue.

A Hopeful Outlook

As the Week of Prayer unfolds, state officials, including First Lady Abbott, express hope that these collective efforts will not only provide comfort to those affected but also disrupt the cycle of trafficking. The belief in the power of solidarity drives Texas’s commitment to eradicating human trafficking, extending beyond prayer into tangible actions that create safer environments for the vulnerable.

The observance serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against human trafficking and the role that community engagement plays in achieving justice and support for survivors. By fostering a united front, Texas aims to strengthen its resolve against this pervasive issue, demonstrating that collective action can lead to meaningful change.
