The Shenandoah County Library is broadening its outreach efforts, aiming to enhance community engagement beyond its traditional role as a book lender. Under the guidance of new outreach services coordinator, Morgan Strassner, the library is actively promoting its potential as a vibrant community hub. “We’re trying to tell the community that the library can be so much more for you than a place where you can get books,” Strassner noted, emphasizing the importance of fostering connections among residents.
Strassner, who personally identifies as a non-traditional reader, often encounters individuals who share similar sentiments about reading. “I don’t really read either. I listen to audiobooks, which is still reading,” she explained. This perspective underscores her commitment to making the library a welcoming space, free from financial pressures. “The library is one of those last free spaces… there’s no expectation of you spending money you don’t have,” she added.
The library’s outreach efforts kicked off with a successful Taylor Swift launch party in mid-October, where participants gathered to enjoy the artist’s new album while creating friendship bracelets. “We had all ages,” Strassner reported, highlighting the event’s role in fostering community bonds. This gathering not only allowed attendees to engage in a craft but also created an environment conducive to making new friendships.
Hoping to redefine what outreach means for the library, Strassner emphasized the dual responsibility of communication and community interaction. “You have to put the word out. But you also have to be out in the community and make connections,” she stated. The feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, with Strassner noting that even small gatherings can resonate deeply. “Attendance is something that we measure… but just getting feedback from the community members that they enjoyed it, and want to keep coming to the library, I consider that a success,” she explained.
Strassner is eager to hear from the Shenandoah County community about their needs and interests. “We want to hear from you,” she implored. Residents are encouraged to share suggestions for book purchases or event planning. Those interested can reach her at [email protected] or call 540-984-8200.
To maintain this momentum, Strassner has compiled a robust calendar of events for November, designed to appeal to a wide audience. Highlights include:
