Oscar Smith High School celebrated significant achievements in Virginia high school football as senior wide receiver Travis Johnson was honored as the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year, while head coach Chris Scott received the Coach of the Year accolade. These awards come after Johnson’s standout season, where he amassed 56 receptions for 1,157 yards and 15 touchdowns, solidifying his status as a key player for the Tigers.

Under Coach Scott’s leadership, Oscar Smith secured its second consecutive state title, marking the fourth championship win during his tenure. Johnson’s recognition as Offensive Player of the Year reflects not only his personal achievements but also the Tigers’ successful season, which culminated in a victory against Indian River with a score of 33-20 on September 20, 2025, at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Johnson was joined on the first team by a talented group of teammates, including junior quarterback Lonnie Andrews, senior offensive lineman Dory Wilson, sophomore defensive lineman Lincoln Halliday, senior linebacker Malachi White, senior defensive back Jayden Covil, senior punt returner Quali Price, and senior all-purpose player Na’Rod Jarvis. Additionally, the second team included senior tight end Charles McGlown and Jarvis, who was recognized for his performance as a linebacker.

In college football news, Old Dominion University is experiencing changes in its roster. Starting tight end Jailen Butler is planning to enter the transfer portal, as reported by sports journalist Pete Nakos of On3 Sports. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound player has made 21 starts during his career, recording 18 receptions for 103 yards and one touchdown.

On a positive note for the Monarchs, they have gained a commitment from running back Hunter Patterson, who will transfer from Division II West Liberty University. In his previous season, Patterson rushed for 1,219 yards and 17 touchdowns on 174 carries, while also contributing with 33 catches for 418 yards and three touchdowns. His addition aims to bolster Old Dominion’s offensive capabilities.

Scholar Athletes in Women’s Soccer

In women’s soccer, two players from Christopher Newport University have been recognized as Scholar All-Region athletes. Senior midfielder Hanna Heaton and junior goalkeeper Amy Sidaway earned places among the ten players selected for the Scholar All-South Region honors. This marks a notable achievement for Heaton, who has been a repeat selection to the first team.

The recognition of Heaton and Sidaway extends a program-record streak to eight consecutive years with at least one player acknowledged for her outstanding performance both on the field and in academics. To qualify for the Scholar All-Region honors, players must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.40 while participating in a minimum of 75% of their games.
