A recent study conducted by personal-finance website WalletHub has identified the New York metropolitan area as the best location for Halloween festivities in the United States. The analysis highlights New York City for its abundance of candy stores, costume shops, and high engagement in Halloween-related searches.
WalletHub evaluated the top 100 most populated U.S. cities based on metrics related to trick-or-treater friendliness, Halloween activities, and weather conditions. The findings reveal that New York City boasts the highest number of candy stores per capita and the second-most Halloween costume shops. Residents also exhibit a keen interest in Halloween, searching Google for terms like “Halloween parties” more than any other city.
The study emphasizes the ease of trick-or-treating in New York City, which has the nation’s highest population density and the second-best walkability score. These factors contribute significantly to the overall Halloween experience, making it an ideal destination for families and individuals alike.
Ranking the Best Halloween Cities
To assess the best cities for Halloween, WalletHub used 20 different metrics. These included the proportion of the population under 15 years old, pedestrian safety, and the availability of Halloween-related stores. Trick-or-treater friendliness was weighted most heavily, while weather considerations were given less importance.
Following New York City in the rankings are Jersey City, which secured the second position, and Los Angeles, ranked third. Newark, New Jersey, also made the top ten, coming in at number ten. Jersey City is noted for its high population density and walkability, making it another excellent option for trick-or-treating. The city also benefits from a low violent crime rate and a favorable property crime rate, enhancing its reputation as a safe place for Halloween celebrations.
Los Angeles, while ranked third, offers a wealth of pumpkin patches, Halloween party supply stores, and a robust selection of amusement parks and movie theaters. The city’s eighth position in the number of haunted houses per capita adds to its appeal for thrill-seekers.
Halloween Spending and Cultural Impact
As Halloween approaches, the average U.S. household is expected to spend approximately $114.45 on decorations, costumes, and treats. Collectively, this amounts to an estimated $13.1 billion contributed by the 73% of American households that celebrate the holiday.
Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, remarked on the significance of Halloween in American culture, noting, “Halloween holds a big place in American popular culture, and we collectively spend billions of dollars celebrating every year.” He also highlighted the inherent risks associated with the holiday, particularly as children visit strangers’ homes after dark.
The study concludes that the best cities for Halloween are those that not only offer a variety of activities and Halloween-related stores but also prioritize safety for those celebrating the occasion.
