Timothy Newsome has transformed his yard in Westlake, Louisiana, into a vibrant tribute to his late father, Eddie JLP Newsome, who passed away on May 5, 2024. This elaborate Christmas display honors the cherished family tradition that Eddie began decades ago, ensuring the holiday spirit continues to shine brightly.
Timothy recalls how his father took immense pride in creating the most festive home on the block. “My dad started this tradition many years before I was born,” Newsome said. “He was a big kid when it came to stuff like that.” Originally, Eddie decorated the home at the end of Patin Road before moving to the corner of Garden and Carlin Streets, where Timothy grew up.
The annual display grew to remarkable proportions under Eddie’s care. “He had hundreds and hundreds of plastic figurines — I think I counted over 300,” Newsome noted. The elaborate decorations drew visitors from afar, with some traveling from Texas specifically to see the lights each year.
As a child, Timothy eagerly helped his father and his five siblings set up the display. Even after starting his own family, he continued the tradition at his residence on Arthur Street. “Even in his last Christmas with us, Dad was outside helping me decorate my yard,” he reflected.
Setting up the display, affectionately called “Newsome’s Old Fashioned Christmas Lights,” takes about two weeks each year. This year, the installation includes an impressive 8,080 light bulbs, 256 stake nails, 253 plastic figurines, 233 extension cords, and numerous other decorations. Timothy has introduced photo cutouts for visitors and wooden nutcrackers made by local students, adding personal touches to the setup.
He honors his father’s memory by leaving an empty chair outside, symbolizing Eddie’s presence in spirit. “I know he’s still there with me,” Newsome said. “This was something that was so special between me and my dad that I want to continue it for the next generation.”
The community has embraced Timothy’s efforts, contributing to the festive atmosphere. “My neighbors are awesome and work well with me on the lights,” he stated. “They even let me extend my display a bit into their yards.” The positive feedback from passers-by brings joy to Timothy, evoking the same delight his father experienced during the holiday season.
Timothy Newsome’s dedication to keeping his father’s legacy alive not only illuminates his yard but also spreads joy throughout the neighborhood, creating a lasting bond that transcends generations.
