Lloyd Goerke, a respected veteran and long-time executive at 3M, passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 94. He is remembered for his dedication to family, community service, and his remarkable contributions to the chemical industry.
Born on January 5, 1931, to William and Cora Goerke, Lloyd grew up on a farm near Red Lake Falls, Minnesota. His early education took place in a one-room schoolhouse, and he later graduated as valedictorian from his local high school in 1949. Lloyd pursued higher education at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in Chemistry in 1953.
Military Service and Career at 3M
After working at Mallinckrodt Chemical Works in St. Louis, Missouri, Lloyd enlisted in the U.S. Navy in early 1956 as an Aviation Officer Candidate. He was commissioned later that same year and underwent basic flight training in Pensacola, Florida, followed by advanced training in Hutchinson, Kansas. Lloyd earned his Navy Wings of Gold in 1957 and completed a two-year overseas tour flying in the Western Pacific. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve out of Minneapolis for three additional years.
In 1960, Lloyd began a distinguished 32-year career at 3M, where he held various technical and supervisory roles across four plants. He served as a production superintendent and plant manager, ultimately retiring as Division Manufacturing Director in 1991.
Community Involvement and Legacy
In retirement, Lloyd remained active in his community. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, and traveling, while also dedicating his time to volunteer work. His contributions included delivering meals for Meals on Wheels, assisting at food shelves, and providing tax assistance for the elderly. His commitment to community service extended to his involvement with Wesley Meals in downtown Minneapolis.
A passionate supporter of Golden Gopher football and basketball, Lloyd’s legacy also includes the establishment of scholarship funds in his name at the University of Minnesota and Carleton College. He was a devoted member of Grove United Methodist Church since 1991, where he served on the Board of Trustees and held the position of chairman for one year.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during an evening visitation on December 19 from 17:00 to 19:00 at O’Halloran and Murphy Funeral Home in Woodbury. A funeral service will take place the following day, December 20, at Grove United Methodist Church, with visitation beginning at 10:00, a memorial service at 11:00, and a lunch to follow at noon. Inurnment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery will occur at a later date.
Lloyd Goerke leaves behind his beloved wife, Ann, along with his adopted son, Charles Anderson (Lesa), stepson Robbin Anderson (Valerie), two granddaughters, one great-grandson, one great-granddaughter, two nieces, and one nephew. His impact on those around him will be remembered fondly.
