Two students from Greenville Middle School have gained statewide recognition for their impressive achievements in an essay contest organized by the Alabama Peace Officers Association. On February 12, 2024, Justin Lovvorn, a representative from the association, visited the school to present awards to Brayden Coleman and TaRiyah Jordan, who secured second and third places, respectively.
The contest invited students to articulate their personal reasons for rejecting drugs and alcohol through their essays. Lovvorn expressed his enthusiasm during the award presentation, noting, “So when they told me that we had two winners from Greenville Middle School, I thought it was so awesome because it’s been a little while since we had a winner come from right here, and now we have not just one, but two.”
To maintain objectivity in the judging process, the essays were evaluated by law enforcement officers from different regions of the state. Lovvorn explained, “The northern side of the state judged the southern side, and the southern judged the north side.” The judging took place several months prior in Montgomery, and Lovvorn mentioned that some of the winning essays may be featured in the association’s upcoming journal.
“I was able to read them and they’re really good,” Lovvorn told the students. “They’ll be published, I believe, in our Alabama Peace Officer’s journal that’s about to come out, so now you’re both published writers.” In addition to certificates, Coleman and Jordan received a formal resolution from the association and a monetary award.
Lovvorn highlighted the Alabama Peace Officers Association as one of the largest and oldest law enforcement organizations in the state. The recognition of these students not only showcases their writing skills but also reflects their commitment to making responsible choices.
Johnna Pitts, the students’ English teacher, commended Coleman and Jordan for their dedication and talent. “I’m just so proud of Brayden and TaRiyah; they’re both excellent students,” Pitts stated. “They try really hard and they put a lot of effort into this, so I’m very proud of them. The whole school is proud of them.”
School officials emphasized that this recognition underscores the students’ capabilities and their positive message against substance abuse. The success of Coleman and Jordan serves as an inspiration for their peers, demonstrating the impact of thoughtful writing and the importance of making healthy life choices.
